Some Barnegat History and Stories
A sailor on Barnegat Bay and Commodore of the Green Island Yacht Club, Doyle much enjoys the salt water and NJ shore. He and his wife Donna of over 40 years, live in a water front home in Green Island, Toms River.
I am a licensed United States Coast Guard U.S. Merchant Marine Officer and recognized by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) as a professional charter fishing captain. I fish the area around Barnegat Inlet, NJ aboard my 28′ Pursuit “First Catch”. I love fishing! It is simple as that and I have been blessed in that I have been able to fish thousands of hours over the last few years and don’t mind sharing what I have learned. My goal is simple, promote the joy and techniques of fishing with as many people as possible. Please, if you have a suggestion let me know. If you like what I write let me know. If I am wrong about something or you have better ideas I would love to hear from you.
I live in Barnegat, NJ near the Quaker Meeting house. They have their own cemetery. Does anyone know if there are any haunted places in Barnegat or about that cemetery. Are there any hauntings from KKK activity? I heard back in the day KKK was active in and around this area. Creepy
1940 Due to minimal traffic, and expected traffic that had converted to trucks, an application for abandonment of SNJ is submitted. Last revenue box car for Tuckerton on SNJ is shipped August 20. Scrapping of the line begins. Engine No. 5 pulls the scrapping train towards the CNJ’s Barnegat interchange. When the scrapping is finished, old Engine No. 5, 50 years old at this point, is cut up on site in Barnegat.
1939 NRHS railfan trip on the SNJ on April 16, 1939. CNJ Blue Comet equipment shows up in Barnegat and SNJ Engine No. 5 and 6 take the coaches to Tuckerton.
1936 Tuckerton Railroad requests abandonment proceedings. Alternatives to TRR operations are considered by the on-line businesses. The most likely carrier would have been the Central Railroad of New Jersey (reporting mark CNJ),operating the line from its Toms River branch which terminated in Barnegat. The CNJ declines, stating the time to get to Barnegat is already 8 hours, and a trip further to Tuckerton and back would have required overtime hours, and that would have not been profitable for the little traffic moved.

One night while flipping the channels, I noted the program The Jersey Shore. Clicking to see the program information, I couldn’t believe what I read. The show was based in Seaside Heights, NJ. I was a city kid from the Bronx whose family spent vacation time every summer at the shore. The next community over from “the Heights” was Seaside Park. They were right next to each other. It was a matter of crossing a street to go from one to the other. The Park was more quiet while the Heights had the boardwalk and rides. We always rented several houses in the Park. I have many fine memories of summers spent with my large Irish family on the beautiful Jersey Shore. I learned how to go crabbing in the bay (Barnegat Bay) and watched my grandmother cook the huge blue claw crabs for a feast. We didn’t have to worry about what we were eating in those days. We had BBQ’s, went to drive in movies, the boardwalk, collected shells and I met my first boyfriend, a surfer and a lifeguard. Great memories.

Fast food restaurant chains, such as Blimpie and Subway, have their own variation of a club sandwich. These chains specifically use “hoagie” or submarine style rolls in their sub sandwiches, and their club sandwiches follow the same pattern, as opposed to the traditional three slices of toasted bread. I love meatballs and probably do not make them enough for my husband’s taste, so I decided I needed to make some up again. This time I happened to have really good Italian bread from the bakery and decided to make sub sandwiches out of them. These would also be fantastic in spaghetti. I am working at coming up with other sauce recipes so that I can have a meatball appetizer party eventually. But this is a straightforward Italian take on meatballs.

Jimmy Johns has a long list of delicious sandwiches that I love. I guess I love them simply because it is the fresh ingredients they maintain. They make all their own bread every day, slice their own meat everyday, and have fresh toppings; yep you guessed it, every day. They serve 8” sandwiches and also what they call giant subs which are still 8” but they have a lot more toppings and meat on them. They have also expanded from their warm coke drink selection and offer many more drinks selections. As well as having sub sandwiches they have wraps and cookies. Jimmy’s is also the fastest delivery place I have ever come across, sometimes it is like in the old cartoons where the character no sooner gets off the phone and his sandwich is there for him to enjoy.
